Het project
‘Shadow Game’ volgt jonge vluchtelingen tijdens hun reis door Europa. Op de vlucht voor armoede en oorlog hebben ze hun hoop gevestigd op Europa: het is veilig en welvarend, mensen zijn vriendelijk en respecteren de mensenrechten. Eenmaal in Europa komen de kinderen erachter dat de dingen niet zo idyllisch zijn. De grenzen proberen te overschrijden – ‘het spel’ zoals ze het noemen – is moeilijk en gevaarlijk geworden. Ze worden vaak zelf een spel, een gemakkelijke prooi in een wereld vol roofdieren. Zonder het expliciet te stellen, stelt het project de vraag: “Wie is verantwoordelijk voor deze kinderen? De kinderen zelf, hun ouders, het land van herkomst, Europa, wij?”

‘Shadow Game’ follows young refugees on their journey through Europe. Fleeing poverty and war, they have pinned their hopes on Europe: it’s safe and prosperous, people are kind and respect human rights. But once in Europe, the children find things aren’t quite as idyllic. Trying to cross the borders – ‘the game’ as they call it – has become difficult and dangerous. They often become game themselves, easy prey in a world full of predators. Without asking it explicitly, the project poses the question: “Who is responsible for these children? The children themselves, their parents, the country of origin, Europe, us?”
